Spider

Latin Name: Araneae
Size: Various
Life Expectancy: 1 year usually
Problems: Bites

Spider Problems:

Although spiders are widely feared, only a few species are dangerous to people. Spiders will only bite humans in self-defense, and few produce worse effects than a mosquito bite or bee-sting.

Most of those with medically serious bites, such as recluse spiders and widow spiders, would rather flee and bite only when trapped, although this can easily arise by accident.

Minimizing Spiders:

To minimize spiders, be sure to properly seal off entry ways into your dwelling, including windows, doors and any other openings.

Behaviour, Diet and Habits:

The best-known method of prey capture is by means of sticky webs. Varying placement of webs allows different species of spider to trap different insects in the same area. Web-building spiders have poor vision, but are extremely sensitive to vibrations.

The widow spider is the only spider found in Canada that can be hazardous to humans but interactions between this spider and humans is quite rare.
