Minimizing Squirrel Damage:
To minimize squirrel damage, be sure to properly seal roofs and other areas to inhibit the squirrels ability to chew through.
Food sources should be kept away from squirrels. Garbage containers can attract squirrels.
Food sources should be kept away from rodents. Garbage and small crumbs attract rodents as do most foods found in the kitchen. Foods should be stored in glass or metal containers if possible. Also cardboard and packing materials can attractive rodents as they are used for nests.
Behaviour, Diet and Habits:
Primarily active during the day, squirrels’ diets consist primarily of a wide variety of plants, including nuts, seeds, conifer cones, fruits, fungi, and green vegetation. However, some squirrels also consume meat, especially when faced with hunger. Squirrels have been known to eat insects, eggs, small birds, young snakes, and smaller rodents. Squirrels are excellent climbers and can make their way up most rough surfaces. On occasion, squirrels will chew through plastic and even metal to get to food. Squirrels can cause damage to property when they chew through roofing, walls, wood and wires.
Homeowners in areas with a heavy squirrel population must be vigilant in keeping attics, basements, and sheds carefully sealed to prevent property damage caused by nesting squirrels.
Squirrels are otherwise quite safe and pose almost zero risk of transmitting rabies.
