Wasp

Latin Name: Apocrita
Size: Less than 39 mm (1.54 in)
Life Expectancy: 1 to 10 months on average
Problems: Stings and damage to property

Wasp Problems:

Wasps are considered pests when they become excessively common, or nest close to buildings. People are most often stung in late summer, when wasp colonies stop breeding new workers; the existing workers search for sugary foods and are more likely to come into contact with humans; if people then respond aggressively, the wasps sting. Wasp nests made in or near houses, such as in roof spaces, can present a danger as the wasps may sting if people come close to them. Stings are usually painful rather than dangerous, but in rare cases people may suffer life-threatening anaphylactic shock.

Solutions

Minimizing Wasp Problems:

To minimize wasps building a hive on your property, be sure to properly seal off entry ways into your dwelling, including windows, doors and any other openings.

Behaviour, Diet and Habits:

Wasps may be solitary or may live in various types of communities. The largest of these characterised by having a hive which can number in the hundreds. Wasps eat other insects and sugary foods but can also eat nectar and pollen from flowers. Wasps continually forage for food sources which are either consumed immediately or returned to the hive for the colony to use.
